Meat Seven!

Meet “Seven,” our 5-year-old Angus/Simmental heifer who embodies the best qualities of both breeds. The Angus breed is known for its marbling and tenderness, while the Simmental adds muscling and durability. At Tri-Maples Farm, we’re proud to raise heifers that exhibit these desirable traits, with Seven being a prime example. She’s a gentle giant, with a curious nature and a love for human interaction. Seven is currently raising her calf with patience and dedication, ensuring it’s well-fed and content. Her milk production is impressive, and she’s passed on these qualities to her offspring. When you taste the beef from Seven or any of the other Angus/Simmental heifers at Tri-Maples Farm, you’ll notice a unique flavor profile that sets it apart from other breeds – it’s no wonder why we’re renowned for producing some of the tastiest beef in the region!

The Simmental breed originated in Switzerland, specifically in the Simme Valley (from which the breed gets its
name). The Simmental was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through crossbreeding local cattle
with immigrant breeds like the Ayrshire and the Brown Swiss. The goal was to create a breed that would excel in
both milk production and beef quality, as many dairy farmers in Switzerland also raised cattle for meat.

The Simmental breed quickly gained popularity due to its versatility, hardiness, and high-quality milk and meat. By the mid-20th century, Simmental had become one of the most widely kept breeds in Europe, with a large population in countries like Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Simmental was introduced to other parts of the world, including North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Today, Simmental is found on farms and ranches across six continents, with a thriving global breed association that promotes the breed’s genetic potential and best practices in breeding and management.

The Simmental breed is known for its muscling, fertility, and longevity. Cattle of this breed are typically large framed with a dark brown coat and distinctive white markings on their faces. They excel at milk production, producing high-quality milk with a high butterfat content. Simmental also have an impressive growth rate, making them popular among commercial cattle producers who raise them for both milk and beef.
